How To Have a Sustainable and Inclusive ‘One Gin’ Halloween

Sustainable Halloween

Sustainable Halloween

At One Gin we know we can’t change the world overnight but we can change lives one bottle at a time, one person at a time, one day at a time. This belief is at the heart of everything we do and why we are about having a sustainable Halloween celebration.

Making a difference also works closer to home; even small changes in the way you celebrate Halloween this year can have a positive impact on the world around us.So here are a few ideas

1.The Teal Pumpkin Project:

As we know, Halloween is a time for eating lots of sweet sugary treats. Children all over the UK go out trick or treating and share the season with friends. But what about those children who aren’t able to participate? Children with dietary restrictions caused by medical conditions which mean that they can’t celebrate Halloween in the same way as their friends? …Well by making a small change to our Halloween preparations we can be more inclusive this Halloween.

The teal pumpkin project was started in America by ‘Food Allergy Research & Education’ (FARE) and every year it makes a small positive difference to someone’s trick or treating adventures.

In order to get involved in the project, all you need to do is buy some non-edible treats and display a teal coloured pumpkin outside your house (we’d also recommend writing up a sign to let people know what you’re doing and why). So simple and yet can make such a difference for a little vampire’s night.

2. Non-bake Halloween treats:

Save on electricity and have a more sustainable Halloween. Try this delicious spider web design cheesecake:

Or for a healthier option, how about these monster bell pepper salad cups?:

3. Re-use

Stay away from plastic bags or buckets this Halloween. Try using a reusable bag or bucket instead (or a pillow case for a ghostly effect…). Decorate these as necessary…

4. Ditch the plastic

Make some sustainable Halloween egg carton bats and leaf ghosts. This is a great way to re-use your empty egg cartons and to clear away a few fallen leaves.  And a very lovely way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon en famille.

Why not check out @tonledesign on Instagram and take part in their October tonlé activist challenge? All they ask is that you create Halloween decorations or costumes using sustainable items.

5. Enjoy a warm drink that makes A DIFFERENCE

One for the grown-ups, while bringing the kids trick-or-treating keep warm with a flask of our delicious hot One Gin cider. One Gin supports the work of The One Foundation funding clean water projects in the worlds poorest communities.

Celebrates Apple Month with One Gin

It’s wet and getting darker; Autumn is well and truly here. But every cloud has a silver lining – It’s National Apple Month from mid-September through to October, a celebration of one of the nation’s favourite fruits (we have no less than 2,300 varieties preserved in the National Fruit Collection).

What is Apple Month?

This annual celebration of apples and orchards has evolved from World Apple Day, traditionally held on the 21st of October; events are held across the country, ranging from apple games in public gardens to village fairs with cookery demonstrations, juice and cider, and the sale of many hundreds of apple varieties.

One Gin will be joining in the apple festivities as this multi-faceted fruit has special significance for us; our perfect G&T is served with a quality tonic and a couple of fresh, crisp apple slices (and a sage leaf when in season)…They go beautifully with the distinctive sage flavour profile of our gin…And you get the added bonus of having a very tasty apple slice to nibble on when your glass is sadly empty.

Apples and Gin?

Apples are also very close to our hearts as earlier this year, we launched our second ‘child’, One ‘sage and apple’ gin, an orchard-fresh twist on the original, to great acclaim with The Craft Gin Club (we recently discovered that it is rather extraordinary as an after-dinner digestive. Just don’t forget to put the bottle in the freezer for a couple of hours beforehand).

Our Celebration

To celebrate all things apple, in the next few weeks, we will be sharing recipes, weird and wonderful facts, and cocktails featuring apples. Last weekend, we celebrated Apple Day at Morden Hall Park, and noted that visitors were rather partial to our seasonal hot gin and cider cocktail. This coming Sunday 6th October, we are off to Fulham Palace for more Appleness and celebrations in the walled garden, from tastings to live music to beekeeping and woodturning demonstrations, to a hotly anticipated baking competition, children’s activities, storytelling and more.

We consume around 122,000 tonnes of apples a year –  that’s enough to fill 325 swimming pools

If you can’t join us this weekend, you can still partake in the festivities, with our Apple Month Competition: Share your favourite apple and gin cocktail by tagging us or using #onegoodgin and you can win a bottle of One ‘sage and apple’ Gin, with two gleaming Root 7 copper mugs

If you are not one of lucky ones, you can still treat yourself or someone special to a One Gin 70 cl + 2 copper mugs pack.

45% of apples grown in UK are used to make cider.

Cocktail of the month: Hot Gin and  Apple Cider

A warming cocktail that’s just perfect for a night out trick or treating, at fireworks displays or a cosy night in.
